Peter Not only is there Hamilton Cherry McKee, but even one Hamilton Cherry Merry McKee. I kid you not.ooedelweissoo I am searching for a castle in Ireland that belonged to a man named cherry. His last name may have been Mc Kee although my grandmother's memory does not serve her well. Her father's name was Hamilton Cherry Mc Kee. Cherry was either his father's or his grandfather's uncle.Hamilton was born in Belfast and the castle may have been near there. He was married to a woman named Sarah Johnson.I know this is vague, but if anyone can even give me a clue or a guess or suggest a way to find this castle it would be much appreciated. Peter Phew !
You are right on the vague bit.
I'm doing a little research at present due to a forthcoming trip to Ireland after Easter. So will keep my eyes open for you as I plow through various books.
I know you most likely realise that it may not be a castle, but a tower. As there is very little documentation on many of these, it sometimes vary difficult to find owners,or, people that lived in them.
If no one else gives you a hint, will get back to the site later in the week.Peter Well knock me down with a feather !
Our second was born 'about' 1852, and died 1st Sept. 1878, Lisburn, Co. Down. This is some 10-miles or so south/west of Belfast.
Although the second was born in 1879, his birth place is not given.
I could not find anything in a short search on Sarah Johnson.
With the death of one and the birth of another, with vary similar names, there is a strong suggestion of a link.
I did note that many of the McKee line are actually from the Donegal area on the west coast. But all links do point to them being a family of Northern Ireland.
The 'Hamilton' family were very powerful in Ireland in their day, and built, or, had a hand in many castles. It is more likely that the McKee family may have been linked to them. Hence giving their son (s) the first name of 'Hamilton'.
Where the 'Cherry' & 'Merry' come from I haven't a clue !
But it certainly is a brilliant part of the family name to wonder at.ooedelweissoo Thanks, it's so hard to find anything without having to pay to look at geneology records. Just before reading this I found that record for Cherry Merry McKee. The problem is, I'm not even sure if the last name was Mckee! And I haven't been able to link any of the Cherry McKees that I have found with a castle.
